Govaert Flinck was born in Cleves in 1615 or 1616 and died in Amsterdam in 1660. He was apprenticed first to Lambert Jacobsz. in Leeuwarden. Afterwards he and Jacob Becker who apprenticed at the same time that Flinck did, went to Amsterdam to work under Rembrandt from about 1633 to 1636. He was active in Amsterdam, where his works can be see in the Rijksmuseum, and Leeuwarden. Nine of his drawings are included in the collection of the Museum Boymans-van Beunigen and are illustrated in Jeroen Giltaij, The Drawings by Rembrandt and his School (Rotterdam: Museum Boymans-van Beunigen, 1988).
