18th-Century Drawings: Mouricault (French, fl. 1768-1795),
Very little is known about the artist. Mouricault was elevated to the French Academy in 1769 and was still showing at the Salin in 1795. In 1779 he was one of the Commissaires du Chatelet and his medal can be seen at http://www.imagescgb.com/images/monnaies/jetons/j13/j13_0237.jpg. He was influenced by Jacques Louis David. Our pieces all appear to have come from a project devoted to the story of Cupid and Psyche. First told in Apuleius' Golden Asse (translated into English by WIlliam Warner in time to contribute to Shakespeare's portrayal of Bottom in A Midsummer Night's Dream), the story also appealed to Raphael's workshop, and the Master of the Die, with a few contribitions from Augustino Veneziano, produced a very popular set of over thirty engravings devoted to the story.
