Antoni Tàpies: Llambrec Material /Material Glance
In 1975, Ediciones Poligrafa in Barcelona published Llambrec Material / Material Glance, a deluxe artist's book with poems by the Japanese poet Shuzo Takiguchi and 12 lithographs by Antoni Tàpies. The poems appeared in Japanese, Catalan, French, and English; the lithographs were printed on hand-made Catalan Estressa paper, a stiff heavy paper with a rich textured surface, measuring 433x318mm (16-15/16x12-1/2 inches) and were loose in the large box. Nine of the lithographs were single-page size, three were double pages measuring 433x654mm (16-15/16x25 inches) with a centerfold. There were 65 portfolios numbered from 1-65 on Guarro paper with each print signed by Tàpies, 10 portfolios numbered from 66-75 on Estressa paper with each print signed by Tàpies, 125 portfolios on Estressa paper with only the justification signed by Tàpies (from one of which the lithographs below originally came), 26 portfolios on Estressa paper with each print signed by the artist and with 6 additional lithographs on Arches paper measuring 560x760 mm which also included an original painting by on Tàpies numbered from A-Z, and 25 portfolios containing the 18 lithographs printed on Rives paper with each print signed by the artist and numbered A-XXV. As one of the poems proclaims, the portfolio is about the "very beauty of the invisible"; as another suggests, " A mirror is but a hole; / from the smallest one in our hand / to that of infinity." And as Hamlet reminds us the purpose of art is to hold the mirror up to nature. So in these lithographs, Tàpies, like Shakespeare, like Blake, like so many other poets and artists, is teaching us how to "know ourselves again." The Museum of Modern Art included Llambrec Material / Material Glance in their 1991 retrospective of Tàpies' prints.

Llambrec Material Justification Page (signed by Tàpies). The portfolio we purchased had been "improved" by someone who took the justification page from one of the copies that had an extra signed and numbered suite of the lithographs, but the basic information is the same and only the first 200 copies of the book had a signed justification page. Copies n. 201-500 did not contain sets of the original lithographs, but offset reproductions only; they were also not signed by Tàpies. For a more readable version of the information contained on this justification page, see the comments about the edition size at the top of this page.
