Eve Déchue / Eve after the Fall (C&R 334 iii/iii trial proof). Original lithograph, 1927-29. Pencil-signed lower right. From 1925 to 1933, while he was finishing the Miserere, Rouault produced several smaller series and single pieces via lithography, of which this is one. Published by Edmond Frappier (who published the majority of Rouault's lithographs: 35), this work shares a format with a number of others, but was not a part of any series. Although Rouault was in the midst of a series of lithographs entitled, Saltimbanques ou Forains, this was publshed separately in a very small edition. In the first version, a transfer lithograph with wash, which is much darker than the later states, there were 10 signed impressions and several signed trial proofs. In the second state, he erased some of the dark areas and added new lines. Only two signed proofs of this state are known. In the final state, he darkened some of the areas he had lightened and published 10 signed impressions. There are also several pencil-signed trial proofs. Ours is a little darker thean the second state and a little darker than the final state, hence it is probably a trial proof intermediate between the second and third state. Numbered 27/100 lower left and pencil-signed lower right. In 1929 Rouault published a suite of 6 original lithographs with Editions des Quatres Chemins Editeur, of which this is plate 3. Initialed and dated 1929 in the stone bottom center-right. The edition consisted of 100 impressions on Rives signed in penncil lower right numbered from 1-100/100 lower left and 25 impressions HC numbered from I-XXV and signed, of which two were reworked using colored crayons and pastel. Mangetout / The Glutton (Le Livre des Livres de Rouault, pp. 186, 192). Photolithograph, 1943. Published in Divertissement / Entertainment (Paris: Teriade, 1943). Edition: 1240 numbered copies of the portfolio, 40 with a suite on old China paper and 1200 on Arches, of which ours is one. There were also 30 Roman-numeral numbered portfolios. Our impression is on Arches. Signed in the plate lower left. For this portfolio of entertainments, Rouault gave some gouaches to Draeger Frères to be engraved. They are made to look as much like gouaches as possible, and even under 10x magnification, one must work hard to accept that these are in fact reproductions of gouaches and not the things themselves. On the verso of each page is a reproduction of the title in Rouault's handwriting (see below). In the catalogue raisonné of Rouault's artist's books, Mangetout is given an entire page to itself; on the facing page, there are four smaller reproductions of additional works Paper size: 424x325mm.
