Proche de l'ete. Original lithograph, 1962. Edition: 90 signed & numbered impressions. Tal-Coat, one of the one of the most important post-war French artists, received the "Grand-Prix National des Arts" in 1968 and had a major retrospective at the Grand Palais (Paris) in 1976. A superb printmaker (as well as a painter), Tal-Coat was represented for many years by Galerie Maeght, then one of the most important galleries in Europe: their roster of artists included Miró, Chagall, Giacometti, Alechinsky, and Bram van Velde; Ellsworth Kelly showed with them while he was living in Paris in the 1960s (as did Saul Steinberg). In the late 1960s they added Antoni Tápies, Claude Garache, Joan Gardy Artigas, and Gérard Titus-Carmel to their roster of regulars. When Sonja and I began collecting in 1976, they were one of the major influences on our taste and for many years most of our new acquisitions derived from artists whose works we encountered there. They encouraged Garache, Artigas, and Titus-Carmel to come to the U.S. for one-person shows at Spaightwood while we were still in Madison WI and helped us to attract a national and international clientelle. Aimé Maeght died in 1982 and most of the artists we had loved were dead by the end of the decade. We began buying directly from the younger artists like Artigas, Garache, and Titus-Carmel. A new era had begun. Image size: 475x655mm. Price: Please call or email for current pricing information.
