Picasso was a fan of the bull-fight and went whenever he could. Partly, this may have been part of his interest in power, both the power of the bull and the power of the bull-fighter, opposing his skill against the massive brute force of the bull. But bull-fighting and bulls for Picasso also partook of his obsession with the minotaur, half-man, half bull, created in adulterous lust and psychological obssession, and often functioning as an image of Picasso himself, particularly in the Vollard Suite, where the the sexual pursuit of women and the war between men and wild beasts (or not so wild, in the case of Ferdinand the Bull, beloved by all parents and children), sometimes come together.
Le boeuf / The ox (B. 330). Original sugar-lift aquatint, 1936. 226 portfolios, of which 36 contain an additional suite of favorite subjects from one of his most important early works, the Buffon portfolio first published in 1942 as Eaux-fortes pour Buffon / Etchings for Buffon. Picasso actually cheated here: he titled this plate Le taureau / The bull even though it was to illustrate Buffon's texts for the ox. Picasso then titled the bull Le toro espagnol. The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, has reproduced this work as a post-card. Image size: 360x280mm. Price: Please call or email for current pricing information.
Plante aux Torritos / Plant with bullflies. Mixed media on heavy laid paper watermarked "Ceci est une reproduction. Picasso." Several of the Torritos appear to have been retouched with ink. In the catalogue raisonné of Picasso's Prints, there is a color linogravure titled "Plante aux Toritos" dated 25 Juin 1956-9 Avril 1960 (Bloch 948) on the same subject as our lithograph, which is dated 24-6-1956 VII, indicating that it is the 7th work Picasso did on June 24. I think Picasso did a number of drawings for the linogravure, one of which he chose as the model for the print, and one of which he liked enough that he gave it to be copied by someone in his studio and then be printed by Mourlot, his regular printer (hence the watermark: "Ceci est une reproduction. Picasso." This tells us that Picasso had special paper made so that he could print reproductions with having to worry about whether someone would add a fake signature and pass it off as an original Picasso lithograph.) There are, however, a couple of areas that look as if they had been retouched with ink, which would make this a hand-retouched lithograph after Picasso and hence possibly of some significant value. I have never seen another one of these so I have no way to see if ours is different from others (which would imply that it is not hand-retouching but part of the printing process and that it was what the watermark says it was). Image size: 498x400mm. Price: NFS
L'Atelier Mourlot. Color lithograph, 1964. 1150 impressions for L'Atelier de Mourlot, a 1964 exhibition of works made at Mourlot's workshop held at the Redfern Gallery in London. Although this is more properly a satyr or a faun than a bull or a minotaur, since we are on the subject of creatures of mixed species, it seems to fit here as well. Picasso produced two lithographs for the catalog, this one and M. 400. We have priced this so inexpensively because the National Gallery of Art printing of the Mourlot catalogue (which preceded the London show) calls this a lithograph after a drawing, although the Redfern Gallery catalogue calls it an original lithograph. Image size: 250x180mm. Price: Please call or email for current pricing information.
The Centaur-Picador (B. 473) Original etching, 1948 270 unsigned impressions for Deux Contes, 1948. Illustrated in Picasso: 55 Years of his Graphic Work. Image size: 327x255mm. Price: Please call or email for current pricing information.

Despite appearances, there is no discoloration in the paper top right.

Picasso was a lover of the bull fight and drew upon the scenes of the ring frequently. A los toros avec Picasso: Le Picador II / The Picador II (Gauss 788, Mourlot 350, Bloch 1017, Cramer 113), Original 23-color lithograph on transfer paper, transferred to stone, 1961. 50 signed and numbered impressions on vellum with wide margins plus the edition for Sabartes' A los toros avec Picasso. Picasso was a lover of the bull fight and drew upon the scenes of the ring frequently. Dated March 6 1961 in the stone lower left along with the indication that it was the second work Picasso did that day. He then added a second date, 21 April 1961 to indicated that he went back and did additional work on the piece. Illustrated (in black & white) in Picasso: 60 Years of Graphic Works (LA County Museum of Art, 1967, p. 343). Image size: 207x226mm. Price: Please call or email for current pricing information.

The paper is actually white and the colors are much more subtle (for instance, in the original, the two blobs to the left of the horse's mouth are different colors (the large one is orange and the smaller one is pinker)
A los toros avec Picasso: Jeu de cape / Pass with a cape (Gauss 790, Mourlot 348, Bloch 1015, Cramer 113), Original crayon and scraper on transfer paper, transferred to stone, 1961. 50 signed and numbered impressions on vellum with wide margins plus the edition for Sabartes' A los toros avec Picasso.
