"Käthe Kollwitz and German Expressionism" features over forty works by Käthe Kollwitz plus additional works by Ernst Barlach, Max Beckmann, Heinrich Campendonck, Marc Chagall, Lovis Corinth, Otto Dix, Conrad Felixmuller, Hans Fronius, Georg Grosz, Erich Heckel, Hannah Hoch, Karl Hofer, Wassily Kandinsky, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Paul Klee, Oskar Kokoschka, Ludwig Meidner, Edvard Munch, Gabrielle Munter, Heinrich Nauen, Emile Nolde, Max Pechstein, Hilla von Rebay, Georges Rouault, Rudolf Schlichter, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Siegfried Schott, Georg Tappert, Wilhelm Wagner, and others.

Heckel, like Ernest Hemingway, volunteered to serve in Flanders during World War I as an ambulance driver and medical orderly; he found war to a profoundly tragic affair and his work portrayed the melancholy of soldiers, the tragedy inflicted upon the landscape ("bare ruined choir, where late the sweet bireds sang," as Shakespeare put it), and the agony of war.
Armierungssoldat (Dube 234). Original etching, 1916. Edition: 50 signed impressions in the only edition published in Berlin in 1920 by Paul Casssirer. Ours is dated "Ostende, 1916." Minor losses in the two lower corners not affecting the image. Image size: 307x238mm. Price: SOLD

Published in Der Bilderman (1916), a German art periodical that commissioned and published original lithographs by a number of Expressionist artists including Barlach, Kirchner, Slevogt, Grossman, and Kokoschka. Signed and titled in the stone. Image size: 256x211mm. Price: $1750.

Published in Der Bilderman (1916), a German art periodical that commissioned and published original lithographs by a number of Expressionist artists including Barlach, Kirchner, Slevogt, Grossman, and Kokoschka. Near Ghent (Davis-Rifkind 1044, Dube 238 II B). Original lithograph, 1916. Published in Der Bilderman (1916), a German art periodical that commissioned and published original lithographs by a number of Expressionist artists including Barlach, Kirchner, Slevogt, Grossman, and Kokoschka. The work foregrounds trees with bare branches in front of a village with no visible occupants. Signed in the stone. Image size: 272x211mm. Price: $1250.
Belgian Langscape (Davis-Rifkind 1045, Dube 242 II B). Original lithograph, 1916. Published in Der Bilderman (1916), a German art periodical that commissioned and published original lithographs by a number of Expressionist artists including Barlach, Kirchner, Slevogt, Grossman, and Kokoschka. In the middle distance a figure is looking to the left at no discernable object while in the rear the sun appears to be rising for a new day. The work depicts depicts a war-ravished landscape with a terrified farmer. Signed and titled in the stone. Image size: 182x224mm. Price: $1500.
