Erich Heckel (German, 1883-1970)

Heckel, like Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Ernest Hemingway, volunteered to serve in Flanders during World War I as an ambulance driver and medical orderly; he found war to be a profoundly tragic affair and his work portrayed the melancholy of soldiers, the tragedy inflicted upon the landscape ("bare ruined choir, where late the sweet bireds sang," as Shakespeare put it), and the agony of war.

Fruhlingslandschaft / Spring Landscape (D-R 1035, Dube 255 B). Original woodcut, 1913. Published in Das Kunstblatt" (1918), a German art periodical that suported modern art in general and Expressionism in particular. Heckel was one of the original members of "Die Brucke" along with Schmidt-Rottluff, Nolde, and Pechstein. Some of his landscapes verge the Apocalyptic, suggesting worlds transformed. In the middle distance a figure is looking to the left at no discernable object while in the rear the sun appears to be rising for a new day. Matrose / Sailor (Dube 247 I-II). Original lithograph, 1917. Our impression printed on buff wove paper and appears to be an intermediate stage between Dube's State I and State II: the background to the right of the sailor’s neck is darker than in the second state, though the line of his nose is not broken (dropped), as it is in the first. It is one of the earliest proofs pulled from the stone. Annotated in pencil lower left: "Lithogr. Hand-druck [hand-printed] / Ostend 1917 / Matrose." Signed in pencil "Erich Heckel" lower right and dedicated near the bottom of the sheet: "“Für Herrn und Frau Dr. Mayer/ von Erich und Siddi Heckel.” Elizabeth Mayer was a patron of the arts; after she and her husband came to America following Hitler's rise to power, they became patrons of W.H.
