Dora Vallier has called Garache the first post-modern artist of the nude in whose works there was no sense of space or place and no shadows. I once asked Garache about the shadow in this piece, and he replied. "It could be water," neither affirming it to be so or denying that it could be a shadow.

L'Ordalie I. Original color aquatint, 1975. 40 signed & numbered impressions plus 120 impressions signed upper right, of which this is one. This work was executed for the deluxe artist's book on which Garache and the poet Yves Bonnefoy collaborated. The book was published in an edition of 120 signed portfolios; the first 40 contained a separate set of the prints. Image size: 250x185mm. Price: $775.
