After the liberation of France in 1944, Miro felt a new sense of hope. He visited the U.S., worked with Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17 in New York, executed several new pochoirs and some etchings with hand coloring via pochoir on small irregularly cut plates, and, after signing up with Aime Maeght's new gallery, began turning more to color lithography. He was also introduced to ceramics by his old friend, Josep Llorens Artigas, beginning a collaboration first with Artigas and then with his son Joan Gardy Artigas that lasted until his death. In 1953, to celebrate his 60th birthday, Miró executed 9 original lithographs for a special number of Derrière le Miroir dedicated to his works.
