In addition to the stories referred ton on the page devoted to Mary Magdalen, the story of the woman taken in adultery is sometimes associated with her as well. The story is to be found in the Gospel according to St. John 8: 3-11: "The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery; and making her stand before all of them, they said to him, 'Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?' They said this to test him, so that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, 'Let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.' And once again he bent down and wrote on the ground. When they heard it, they went away, one by one, beginning with the elders; and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. Jesus straightened up and said to her, 'Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?' She said, 'No one, sir.' And Jesus said, 'Neither do I condemn you. Go your way, and from now on do not sin again.' "
Georg Pencz (German, 1500-1550), Christ and the Woman taken in adultery (Bartsch 55, Hollstein 33). Original engraving, c. 1546. A very good impression trimmed on or within the platemark. Signed in the plate lower right side. From the collections of Furst zu Furstenberg (Lugt 995) and Bechberger (L. 2133). Jesus writes on the ground while the crowd prepares to stone the woman (often identified with Mary Magdalen); in a moment, when no one can acknowledge himself without sin, they will disperse and Jesus will direct the woman to "Go and sin no more." Image size: 61x83mm. Price: $2500.
Jan Saenredam (Dutch, c. 1565-1607), Women of the New Testament: The Woman taken in adultery (Bartsch 47 i/iii). Engraving after Hendrik Goltzius. Signed in the plate at the base of the column lower right: "HGoltzius inuentor I Saendredam sculpt." Ours is a beautiful impression of the first state of three trimmed just inside the platemark. In the background, Jesus ignores the woman's accusers and writes on the ground. Provenance: B. P. Ge[nt] No. 47 in pencil verso, unidentified collector's mark verso crown over an interlinked EL monogram verso and with the stamp of Charles M. Lea, whose collection was donated to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, with their crossed out collection number verso. Image size: 188x137mm. Price: $2750.

Carel de Mallery (Antwerp, 1566-1628), Mulier Adultera / The Adulterous Woman (New Holl. 427 iii/iii, with the Biblical citation). Engraving after Maarten de Vos, c. 1597. Image size: 154x94mm. Price: $650.
Jean Baptist Barbé (Antwerp, 1578-1649), Christ and the Woman taken in Adultery (New Hollstein de Vos 302 copy b). Engraving after Maarten de Vos as published by CJVischer in 1643 and 1648. The scene depicts some of the sins that the accusers are not without: the conspiring elders seeem not to care about punishing the woman as having a pretext for discrediting Jesus. the temple guard fondling the woman's breast des not seem to concerned about the prohibition against adultery since he too would be liable, the elder at left closeset to Jesus is peering through very thick lenses at Jesus writing on the floor of the temple, perhaps to suggest his blindness, and the two priests in the rear behind and to the left of St Peter and St John seem locked in an embrace of their own. Ours is a beautiful impression with large margins. Image size: 205x258mm. Price: $850.
