Gerard Titus-Carmel: Paintings
Nuit Carrée IV / Square Night IV. Oil on canvas, 1984. Image size: 2050x2050 mm (80x80 inches). The title plays off the geometrical description with its metaphorical connotation of "Plain, straightforward" and its numerical/moral connotation of "Four-square" to present us with an emotional night or dream state of transformations and shifting versions of imaginative realities that is anything but plain or straightforward. One of Titus-Carmel's masterpieces. Illustrated in Nuits: vingt-quatree peintures réalisées en 1984 published under the direction of the Musées de Nice for an exhibition at the Galerie des Ponchettes (1985); it is also illustrated in a catalogue published for the same exhibition by the Musée d'Art Moderne de Villeneuve d'Ascq. Price: $125,000.
Intérieurs—Peinture 30. Acrylic on canvas, 1988. Illustrated repères 54 (1988) and Musée Ingres (1990). Included in Titus' 1990 Retrospective at the Musée Ingres. The painting is also illustrated in a catalogue issued for a retrospective sponsored by the French "Ministere de la Culture, de la Communication, et des Grand Travaux" that toured the Middle East in 1990-91 with stops at the Centres Culturel Francais in Damascus, Alexandria, and Cairo and was also presented at Espace 87 in Tunis. This is one of Titus-Carmel's favorite paintings, and was reproduced as a poster for his Chateauroux exhibition in 1987. Included in Titus' 1990 Retrospective at the Musée Ingres. Image size: 1160x890 mm (45.6x35 inches). Price: $60,000.
Chancay: Peinture No. 6. Oil on canvas, 1985. Included in the Titus-Carmel issue of Eighty Magazine, 1988. Exhibited in 1985 at Galerie Lelong, Paris. Another painting in this series was purchased by the Guggenheim museum and was included in their 50th Anniversary Show and Catalogue of the most significant acquisitions of their first 50 Years. Image size: 1300x1620 mm (51.2x64 inches). Price: $80,000.

With 43 illustrations, an insightful essay, a list of one-person exhibitions, and a full but selective bibliography of writings about Titus-Carmel, it’s the best available introduction to his work (up to 1992) in English. We also have copies of the 1992 Catalogue Raisonne of his prints published in Tokyo by the Machida Museum with text in Japanese and French and illustrations of every print Titus had made up until the date of its publication (about 200 works). Three thousand copies were printed, and almostall sold in Tokyo. Rare in Europe and America. Mint copies availabe for $125.
