Repliquer I (Galfetti 819). Original etching with carborundum, 1981. Repliquer was a livre d'artiste with a text by Jean Daive and 4 etchings by Antoni Tàpies. It was issued in an edition of 200 copies containing the four etchings, one of them signed and the other three unsigned, on Arches paper measuring 285x204mm. The first 50 were accompanied by a separate portfolio containing the four etchings with large margins, signed and numbered, on Arches paper measuring 401x308mm. All of the etchings were printed by Atelier Morsang, Paris, and published by Galerie Maeght, Paris. There were also 20 HC portfolios, but it is not clear if they include the deluxe suite. All of the books were signed by the author and the artist on the justification page (see below). Because the etchings in the regular edition of 200 were printed on smaller paper, they have smaller margins or none at all. Through the use of the carborundum, Tàpies has achieved a rich three-dimensional surface for these etchings. Image size: 202x168mm. Paper size for the deluxe signed and numbered suite: 401x308mm. Price: $5600.

Our impression comes from n. 53. From at least Plato on the skull has served as a reminder of human mortality and appears often in art, especially in connection with St. Jerome and Mary Magdalene, as well as in literature (where would Hamlet be without Yorick's skull?).
