Joan Miró: The 1940s: Pochoirs, etchings, and a lithograph

After the fall of the Spanish Republic, Miro took refuge with Braque in Varengeville, France, where he began work on The Constellations, a series of small gouaches. With the German invasion of France, however, and the collapse of French resistance as German troops drove towards the southeast, Miro, in a state of near despair, snuck back into Spain and spent the next several years finishing The Constellations and beginning a series of 40 black and white lithographs known as the Barcelona Series, in which all of the savagery of both the Spanish Civil War and the German invasion of France, Miro's second country and hoped-for refuge, is depicted (Miro would later return to this style and imagery in the black and white lithographs of the Ubu Roi series of 1966). After the liberation of France in 1944, Miro felt a new sense of hope. He visited the U.S., worked with Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17 in New York, executed several new pochoirs and some etchings with hand coloring via pochoir on small irregularly cut plates, and, after signing up with Aimé Maeght's new gallery, began turning more to color lithography.

Femme et Oiseau devant la Lune (Dupin 51). Original etching and aquatint, 1947. 300 signed, dated, and numbered impressions for the Laurels Number One Portfolio, of which ours is 255/300. Printed at Atelier 17 in New York. A superb, dark impression of this early print. Three light stains c. one inch from the platemark. A rare and beautiful print. Image size: 110x150mm. Price: SOLD.

L'Antitete (Dupin 59, Cramer 20). Original etching with hand-coloring printed from a hand-shaped copperplate, 1947. 200 unsigned impressions without the hand-coloring for Tristran Tzara's L'Antitete, part III: Le Désespéranto. of the total edition of 200 books signed by Miró and Tzara, only 31 sets of the books (8 on imperial Japon paper and 23 on Van Gelder Holland paper) came with unsigned impressions hand-colored by pochoir. Ours is one of only a few artist's proofs with hand-coloring signed by Miro. Published by Bordas (Paris) in 1949. (There are also five signed proofs on larger paper without the hand-coloring.) Extremely rare. Provenance: Sold in 1947 by Galerie Gerald Cramer; repurchased from the oringinal buyer by Galerie Patrick Cramer in 2001. Image size: 142x114mm. Price: $17,500.

Serie V (D. 96). Original etching, 1947-53. 13 signed & numbered impressions + an unknown (but very small) number of impressions from the cancelled plate. Executed at Atelier 17 in NY in 1947 and printed at Atelier Lacourière in Paris in 1952-53. Very, very rare in both states. Impressions from the cancelled plate were published in in Dix Ans d'Edition in 1956 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Galerie Maeght, Miró's dealer. Image size: 148x125mm. Price: $1775.

There are also 40 signed impressions. Miró began the plate in 1947 at Stanley William Hayter's Atelier 17 and returned to it in 1962 to add the detailing in black. Image size: 355x265mm.
