Dode Rouge. Original color aquatint with burnishing, 1978. 50 signed & numbered impressions on Arches paper measuring 728x570mm. Exhibited in Naked/Nude, a survey of the figure in modern and contemporary art at the Museum of Modern Art, N.Y. (c. Spring-Summer, 1986). It has also been reproduced as a photo-lithograph for an exhibition poster for a show of Garache's work in Barcelona. I have recently discovered, pretty much by accident, that the word dode is a transliteration from The Song of Songs, 1:2 "O that he would kiss me with the kisses of his mouth, for your lovemaking [dodeyka] is better than wine." The commentary to the passage says the "The plural dodim is a comprehensive term for lovemaking, that is, kisses and caresses as well as intercourse. . . . The word 'love' in most translations is too general and evasive" (Ariel Bloch and Chana Bloch, The Song of Songs: A New Translation with an introduction and commentary [NY: Random House, 1995], pp. 137-39). We thought that this was one of Garache's most wonderful works before we had any idea that it might connect to the ecstatic lovemaking hoped for by the Bride: the free-floating figure has always suggested a kind of release from the bondage of the body; with the possible connection to the idea of a bridal night's revels, it suggests even more strongly the body as not merely a release from confinement but a gateway to joy. Image size: 545x443mm. Price: $1600.
Dode II. Original aquatint with burnishing, 1979. 50 signed & numbered impressions on Arches paper measuring 728x570mm published by Galerie Maeght, Paris. Garache prepared a new copperplate to produce this work, giving it a sense of a fearless falling figure. Image size: 548x446mm. Price: $1600.
Bloise. Original color aquatint, 1980. 50 signed & numbered impressions on Ingres papermeassuring 500x655mm. This is a horizontal variant of the figure employed vertically in Dode Rouge and Dode, where the figures seem to be either leaping or falling. Here the figure seems to be floating in an ocean of water (or amniotic fluid). In each case, Garache has made a new plate and slightly varied the image. Because Garache has signed this in the extreme lower right margin, the whole sheet must float in the mat. Image size: 447x542mm. Price: $1500.
Yvie. Original aquatint, 1979. 50 signed & numbered impressions on Arches paper measuring 570x728mm published by Maeght Editeur, Paris. Image size: 548x446mm. Price: $1500.
Sauvechane. Original color aquatint with etching, 1980. 50 signed & numbered impressions on chiffen de Larroque paper measuring 510x665mm published by Galerie Maeght, Paris.. During the first three years of the 1980s, Garache experimented in printing on very absorbant colored drawing papers, often handmade, starting with three red on orange works, two of which we present here. Image size: 422x540mm. Price: $1500.
Naisse. Original color aquatint, 1980. 50 signed & numbered impressions on hand-made red-ochre Moulin de Laarroque paper meaasuring 655x505mm published by Galerie Maeght, Paris. Illustrated in Claude Garache: Prints 1965-1985, ed. Richard Stammelman and Jean F. Feinberg (Ezra and Cecile Zilkha Gallery, Wesleyan Uninversity, 1985). In French, the word for birth is "naissance"; Garache's title reminds us of our first head-first journey from darkness into light (others may include encounters with ice or banana peels, falling head-over-heels in love, and the final leap we take into eternity). Image size: 545x440mm. Price: $1500.
