Images of Women in Renaissance Prints and Drawings
One of the "Little Masters," who made tiny, intricate, and influential prints, Georg Pencz's works always reflected the influence of Albrecht Dürer, whose Nuremberg workshop he entered in 1523. Pencz also kept up with current trends in Italy, varying his style throughout his career. After being banished from Nuremberg in 1525 along with the other "godless painters" Hans Sebald Beham and Barthel Beham for asserting disbelief in baptism, Christ, or transubstantiation, Pencz probably went to northern Italy. Within months, the three were pardoned, and Pencz became Nuremberg's city painter in 1532. He often painted large-scale ceiling decorations on canvas. About 1539 Pencz returned to Italy, visiting Rome for the first time. Back in Nuremberg in 1540, he earned his greatest success as a portraitist. Ten years later Albert, duke of Prussia, named him court painter, but Pencz died in Leipzig on the way to begin his new career. Kurt Locher listed Pencz as one of "the major talents of the younger generation [along with] Barthel and Sebald Beham." In addition to his paintings, Pencz executed many engravings, most quite small in size, and designed woodcuts and stained glass. (Based in part upon the Getty Museum biography)

Georg Pencz (German, 1500-1550), Christ and the Woman taken in adultery (Bartsch 55, Hollstein 33). Original engraving, c. 1546. A very good impression trimmed on or within the platemark. Signed in the plate lower right side. From the collections of the Furst zu Furstenberg (Lugt 2811, which Lugt notes is the "ancienne" mark of the princes of Fürstenberg, and is frequently found on Rembrandt etchings.) and Bechberger (L. 2133). Jesus writes on the ground while the crowd prepares to stone the woman (often identified with Mary Magdalene); in a moment, when no one can acknowledge himself without sin, they will disperse and Jesus will direct the woman to "Go and sin no more." Georg Pencz (German, 1500-1550), Artemesia Preparing to Drink Her Husband's Ashes (Bartsch 83). Original engraving. A very rich impression on laid paper cut on or within the platemark. Titled in the plate top left amd signed with the monogram on the shield bottom right. There is a full-page reproduction of this engraving in The Renaissance Engravers (ed. Charmian Mezentseva, Curator of the Northern European Prints at the Hermitage Museum in Petersburg, Russia), all of whose examples are drawn from the print collection of the Hermitage Museum. Georg Pencz (German, 1500-1550), Sophonisba drinking poison (B. 82, Holl. 134). Original engraving. Pencz came to in Nuremberg in 1523 and entered Dürer's workshop. In 1525, he and the Beham brothers were arrested for espousing the radical views of Thomas Müntzer. They were soon pardoned and allowed to work again. Pencz  was influenced by Marcantonio's style as a printmaker and by Giulio Romano. "Sophonisba" is one of his masterpieces. Titledd lower left on base of seat; signed with the monogram on the bloock where Sophoniba's foot rests. Slightly trimmed at bottom. A brilliant, dark impression! Image size: 182x122mm. Price: SOLD.
