Almost nothing is known about the personal life of Monogrammist IS with the Shovel. Oldenbourg says that he was a "Formschneider [cutter of woodblocks] in Schäufeleins Augsburger Werksett" in 1513. What we know are the 8 books he illustrated with woodcuts mostly in the style of Hans Schäufelein (German, 1480/85-1538/48, who signed his wooducts HS with the Shovel), a pupil of Dürer's c. 1505, with whom Dürer was apparantly on good terms as late as 1519-1520 when he took some of Schäufelein's prints with him on his trip to the Netherlands to sell for Schäufelein). Oldenbourg credits Monogrammist IS with the Shovel with a total of 201 woodcuts: 34 woodcuts for Leben der Heiligen (Augsburg: Hanns Othmar, 1513), and 75 woodcuts for Die Evangelien- und Passions-Folge (Hagenau, 1516, from which our seven woodcuts below all come). He is also credited with 58 woodcuts for Teutsch Ewangeli Vnd Epistel (Hagenaw, 1516), 9 woodcuts for MARCI VIGERII . . . DECAHORDVM CHRISTIANVM (Hagenau, 1517), 38 woodcuts for Smaragdus, Ausslegüug oder Postilla des Heiligen vnd Gotuerstenden Zmaragdi (Strassburg: Crafft Müller, 1536), 72 woodcuts for Doctrina, Vita et Passio Iesv Christi  . . . Künstlich fürgebilder (Franckenfurt am Meyn: Bhritianum Egenolphum, 1537; additional editions in 1543 and 1550), 7 woodcuts for Horario Commemoratio Dominice Passionis (Mainz: Franz Beham, 1547), Joh Wild, Postill . . . (Meynta: Franciscus Behem, 1552), and 27 woodcuts for Joh Brenz, Postill. Ausslegung der Euangelien (Franckfort: Christian Egenolfen, 1554; additional edition pub. 1567 with 14 woodcuts by IS).
