Wagner studied at the Academy in Hanau, but the single greatest influence on his work after about 1919 appears to have been Egon Schiele's drawings and paintings of nudes. During the teens and twenties, he was published in several important German Expressionist art journals including Kriegzeit, Zeit-Echo, and Der Bildermann; he was also selected to contribute to the Gurlitt Print Almanach, Das Graphische Jahr. 15 of his prints are illustrated in Bruce Davis's catalogue of the Collection of the Rifkind Center for the Study of German Expressionist Prints and Drawings at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
Selected Bibliography: Bruce Davis, German Expressionist Prints and Drawings: The Robert Gore Rifkind Center for German Expressionist Studies (Los Angeles: Los Angeles County Museum of Art / Prestel, 1989); Otto Grautoff, Wilhelm Wagner Skizzenbuch (Berlin: Verlag Fritz Gurlitt, 1922); Otto Grautoff, Wilhelm Wagner (München: Moderne Galerie / Thannhauser 1922); Heinrich Heine, Florentinische Nächte, mit Lithographien von Wilhelm Wagner (Berlin: Verlag Fritz Gurlitt, 1920); E. Redslob, Das Graphische Jahr (Berlin: Fritz Gurlitt Verlag, 1921). There is a brief anonymous essay on Wagner in Fritz Gurlitt's Almanach 1920 (Berlin: Fritz Gurlitt Verlag, 1920), "Wilhelm Wagner: Eine Paraphrase von Hambruch," 140-43. which illustrates one lithograph and one etching.
