Picasso was one of the great portrait-makers of the modernist movement. Sometimes very detailed in their portrayals, sometimes generic types, they represent his images of himself and of his rivals (anyone else, some times). He was often intrigued by the subject of children, especially his own and portrayed his children frequently.
Young man carrying a child. Color pochoir after a painting (Two brothers), 1930. 1250 unsigned impressions for Eugenio d'Ors's Picasso, published in Paris in 1930. Executed with Picasso's consent and under his supervision for this early study of Picasso. The first 50 copies contained an original signed and numbered Picasso lithograph executed for this book. Image size: 252x187mm. Price: $1,750.
Le fils de l'artist / The artist's son. Color pochoir after a painting, 1930. 1250 unsigned impressions for Eugenio d'Ors's Picasso, published in Paris in 1930. Executed with Picasso's consent and under his supervision for this early study of Picasso. The first 50 copies contained an original signed and numbered Picasso lithograph executed for this book. Image size: 252x187mm. Price: $1,850.
Claude (M. 186, Gauss 531a, Cramer 60). Original lithograph, 1950. 2000 impressions for the front cover of Picasso Lithographe II published by Editions du Livre Andre Sauret (Monte Carlo, 1950). There were also five impressions combining the front and rear covers on Arches with wide margins. This portrait of Picasso's son Claude was made with fingerprints with ink on transfer paper transferred to stone. Image size: 313x228mm. Price: $2250.
Quatre homme nus assis (B. 111) / Four seated male nudes (B. 127). Original etching, 1931. Published in the Métamorphoses d'Ovide in an edition of 145 impressions. Ours is from the edition of 100 impressions with remarques published from the cancelled plate. The publisher, Albert Skira, went on to become one of the great fine art publishers of the 1930s-1960s and founded Minotaur and Verve. Image size: 322x252mm. Price: $2250.
Classical scene. Lithograph after a drawing, c. 1934. 100 numbered impressions (of which this is 100/100) on laid paper with a high silk content. The style of this piece is reminiscent of that of Picasso's etchings for Lysistrata (1934), but I have not found any documentation of this piece. Image size: 272x383mm. Price: $500.
Corps perdu / The lost body (B. 647). Original engraving, 1949. One of 23 signed & numbered impressions on old japon paper. There were also 7 signed & numbered impressions on imperial japon and 219 unsigned impressions. Our impression is n. 9/30 and is pencil-signed lower right. This is Picasso's transformation of the male sexual organ into an aquatic creature with a life of its own. A very rare print in its signed state. Image size: 375x283mm. Price: $9500.
L'Age de Soleil (B. 680, Cramer 57). Original etching, 1950. Robert-J. Godet's L'Age de Soleil was published in 1950 in an edition of 1114 impressions, each containing an original etching by Picasso (B. 369, dated 1943). Of these, 100 deluxe books also contained this etching. According to Cramer, this etching, after a drawing, was printed by Atelier G. Leblanc in Paris. It is signed in reverse in the plate. There has also been a reprint edition. Image size: 230x180mm. Price: $1,500.
Cubist Portrait of Kahnweiler (M. 403). Original lithograph, 1964. 900 impressions signed in the stone + 100 signed impressions published in Pour Kahnweiler. There were also 100 copies of Pour Kahnweiler reserved for contributors. Our impression is signed in the stone. Kahnweiler was Picasso dealer for paintings from the teens until his death, and Picasso was quite loyal to him. This work was produced for a memorial volume. Image size: 300x220mm. Price: $1,600.
Le vieux roi / The old king (Mourlot 317, Gauss 748, Bloch 869). Original lithograph, 1959. 1000 impressions on thin velin signed in the stone in red as a fund-raiser for the newspaper Le Patriote. There were also 200 pencil-signed & numbered impressions on heavier velin. Image size: 669x512mm. Price: $3500.
Le Cocu Magnifique: planche 6 (Bloch 1249, Baer 1437). Original Etching and aquatint, 1966. 200 unsigned impressions for the portfolio Le Cocu Magnifique published by Fernand Crommelynck, Editions de l'Atelier Crommelynck (Paris, 1966). The work contained 12 original etchings with aquatint. The first 30 portfolios were accompanied by a suite of all of the prints with large margins. The print seems to be the nightmare of an old rake. On the left two women watch as a grinning wizard in a pointed hat and black robe approaches a large pair of testicles with a gigantic hypodermic needle. Immediately below the testicles, three diminutive figures (one seated cross-legged seems to be the chief of a tribe of primitive people wearing a crown of horns and a necklace) watch with interest. To the right, an old man, looking somewhat like the old Picasso, also watches. Overhead, a winged boy, clearly Cupid, the god of love, is about to shoot an arrow from his bow at one of the women on the left. Below roses are scattered (perhaps to remind us that we should gather our rosebuds when we can) which gradually turn into decorations in the hair of the the two women. From the top left, an old man with a beard but without a body watches the scene with what seems to be an expression of sadness. Dated 15.12.66 (15 December 1966) in the plate top left. Ours is a superb impression from the regular edition. Image size: 225x325mm. Price: $3750.
Series 156: 135. Circus Scene (Bloch 1990, Baer 2000). Original etching, 1971. 50 numbered impressions signed with the estate signature stamp. Executed 3/28/71 and approved by Picasso before his death, this etching, like the others in this series, was printed posthumously. Ours is an artist's proof, inscribed "E. A. IX/XVI." A horse and a clown watch a beautiful young model dress. One of the largest etchings in the 156 Series, most of which show aging artists (including Rembrandt, Degas, and Picasso himself) looking at their beautiful young models. Image size: 320x420mm. Price: $9750.
