Andy Warhol moved from a successful career as a commercial artist (specializing in shoe advertisements) to a POP artists specializing in what was popular at the moment (for Warhol, fame was something that didn't last for more than 15 minutes), whether newspaper ads, Brillo boxes, Campbell Soups, movie stars, grieving widows, electric chairs, trucks, or flowers. His studio produced prints under the name of "Factory Additions," his paintings often involved silk-screening images onto canvas, he made movies of more or less static things (a sleeping man, the Empire State Building) because he "liked boring things." And for most people he personified POP Art. His works are in most major American museums, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum in New York, the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington D.C., and many others. His works can also be seen in important public museums in Germany, France, Denmark, Norway, Israel, Japan, and Korea.

The history of Warhol's Marilyn Monroe (F&S 22-31) is unclear. In 1967, Warhol issued a portfolio of 10 color screenprints based upon a publicity photograph by Gene Korman for the 1953 film Niagara. In 1970, "unauthorized prints," published by Sunday B. Morning measuring 845x845mm (33x33inches) in different colors from the portfolio, were published. They were stamped in black on the verso, "published by Sunday B. Morning" and "fill in your signature." Some of these were inscribed by Warhol, "This is not by me. Andy Warhol."

There are also unauthorized prints (914x914mm or 36x36inches, the same size as the Warhol edition) published in the same colors as the original portfolio, in an edition of 250 with a stamped number on the verso. They too bore the stamps of the first "unauthorized" prints: "published by Sunday B. Morning" and "fill in your signature." There are also "unauthorized prints," dated 1985, which have a stamped signature. These are frequently called "the European Artist's Proof Edition."

The pieces illustrated below are all stamped in blue on the verso "published by Sunday B. Morning" and "fill in your signature." They are 914x914mm, the same size as the Warhol edition, and, unless the illustrations in the Feldman/Schellmann Catalogue Raisonné of Andy Warhol Prints (4th edition, 2003) are inaccurate, they are color variants of the Warhol "originals."

Sunday B. Morning, a Swiss publisher, has issued portfolios of both Warhol's Marilyns and his Flowers. Each print is stamped on the verso, "Fill in your own signature," a reference to Warhol's habit of signing his works on the verso and his use of rubber stamps. Some (though not ours, alas) of these prints are hand-signed by Warhol, "This is not by me. Andy Warhol." We have been told that after Warhol had sold out the edition of 250 printed at The Factory, he gave the original screens used to print his edition to Sunday B. Morning but have not found written confirmation of this. If these are printed from Warhol's original screens, they are variant versions of the originals, not screenprints after the originals.
