Louisa Chase (American, b. 1951): Original Prints

Louisa Chase came to prominence in the 1980's as one of the outstanding Neo-Expressionist painters. Her work then was characterized by bold colors and brush strokes, often incorporating natural elements and fragments of the figure. Louisa Chase's works have been featured in gallery and museum shows in Cologne, Nurnberg, Luzem, Switzerland, Toronto, and Tokyo, and various galleries and museums throughout the US. She has also been featured at the American Pavillion at the 1984 Venice Biennale. Also in 1984, the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston organized as travelling exhibition of her work. In 1997, the Madison Art Center organized a retrospective of her prints, Louisa Chase: Prints, 1981-1996. She has been a featured artist at the University of Wisconsin's Tandem Press and at the Tamarind Press; ahe was also invited to do a print for Lincoln Center in New York City. The recipient of two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Chase's works are in the permanent collections of such museum as The Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art (New York), The Brooklyn Museum of Arts, The Corcoran Gallery and The Library of Congress (Washington D.C.), The Walker Art Center (Minneapolis), the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum, the Denver Museum of Art, and the Chazin Museum of Art of the University of Wisconsin, Madsion and the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (Madison WI).

Louisa Chase (American, b. 1951), Untitled (illustrated on p. 153 of Charles A. Riley II, Art at Linbcoln Center: The Public Art and List Print and Poster Collections [NY: Lincoln Center, 2009). Original screenprint, 1982. 144 signed and numbered impressions (of which ours is n. 139/144) published by Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts plus 18 artist's proofs. There was also a poster edition of 580 with a printed text published from the same screens for the Community Holiday Festival, of which Lincoln Center consumed about 300 advertisting the Festival. A very large celebrating fall and Halloween. Chase is an important contemporary painter and printmaker. Her work is featured in Elizabeth Armstrong and Marge Goldwater, Images and Impressions: Painters who Print (Minneapolis: Walker Art Center, 1984); and Richard S. Field & Ruth E. Fine, A Graphic Muse: Prints by Contemporary American Women (for a show at the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum in 1987), and Sheila McGuire and Elizabeth Armstrong, First Impressions: Early Prints by Forty-Six Contemporary Artists (Minneapolis: Walker Art Center, 1989). As Ruth Fine observed in her commentary on Chase in A Graphic Muse, "In boith her paintings and her prints, Chase's symbolic landscapes tend toward the tumultuous. Her images of land and see, storm-filled skies, jagged mountain cliffs, and rough, enveloping ocean waves, are all drawn with a fierce, rapid stroke that establishes adisjointed world. . . . Events always sewem to be cataclysmic. Never comforting, these pictures remind us of our fractured experience" (p. 64). This print was featured in Trudy Victoria Hansen,and Eleanor Heartney, Presswork: The Art of Women Printmakers (Presswork: The Art of Women Printmakers. Lang Communications Corporate Collections (Madison WI: Elvehjem Museum of Art, 1991), which toured at least 9 U.S. museums. Image size:670x1050mm. Price: SOLD.

Chase is an important contemporary painter and printmaker (see above for details). The work is in beautiful conditionexcept at the top corners, where there is a little puckering where the work is hinged to the museum-board mat. Image size: 627x990mm.
