Art for the holidays: Twelfth Night / Valentine's Day / Good Friday / Easter / Mother's Day
Every year for the past 23 years we have said to ourselves, we should have special pages for interesting holidays. And every year for the past 23 years we have, having failed once again to put up a page, said, "Oh well, we'll do it next year." Welcome to next year.

We herewith present, for your consideration, a mixture of old master prints, modern works, several contemporary pieces, and a book by Helen Frankenthaler, Valentine for Mr. Wonderful.
Helen Frankenthaler, Valentine for Mr. Wonderful (NY: Rizzoli, 1996). First trade edition. Unpaginated. Mint in full gilt-stamped cloth in publisher's cloth slipcase with mounted illustration. No dust jacket, as issued. Text is William Carlos Williams' poem, 'St. Valentine.' Illustrated with reproductions of seven color intaglios executed by Frankenthaler for the deluxe version published by Tyler Graphics. Price: $30.
Giulio Sannuti (Venice, active c. 1550), Cupid on a sphere carried aloft by two putti (B. 4). Original etching on laid paper. Sannuti was active in Venice in the mid-16th century. Cupid with his bow stands on a sphere representing the world to show that "Amor vincit omnia" (Love conquers all). Image size: 245x184mm, Price: SOLD.
Jacob Matham (Dutch, 1571-1631), Venus and Cupid (B. 153). Engraving after Hendrik Goltzius, 1597. A good impression on laid paper trimmed within the platemark. Matham was Goltzius' stepson and worked very closely with him. This work is a prime example of Dutch Mannerist printmaking. Image size: 108x74mm, Price: $1250.
Marc Chagall (Russian, 1887-1985), Lovers for Berggruen (The offering) (M. 435i/ii). Original color lithograph, 1965. Circa 1500 unsigned impressions. There are also 75 signed & numbered impressions with large margins of the second state (which includes additional drawing in the margin). Image size: 115x220mm. Price: $1,025.
Marc Chagall (Russian, 1887-1985), Le Ballet: Daphnis et Chloe (M. 581). Original color lithograph, 1969. 10,000 unsigned impressions for Marc Chagall : Le Ballet. One of Chagall's more joyful explorations of the theme of Daphnis and Chloe, the innocent young lovers whose adventures Chagall repeatedly rehearses. In another of his works on this topic, the goatish musician is replaced by Cupid with his bow flying over the lovers. Image size: 325x258mm. Price: $1,275.
Andre Masson (French, 1896-1987), Composition for XXe Siecle. Original color lithograph, 1972. Edition unknown. Masson was one of the founders of the surrealist movement. His works are in every major museum in the world. Image size: 310x242mm. Price: $325.
Sommeil d'hiver / Winter's Dream. Original lithograph, 1938. Edition: as published in the deluxe art review Verve in 1938. Signed in the stone. On the reverse there is a black & white lithograph by Joan Miro which incorporates Klee's name and the title of the work. Image size: 349x250mm. Price: $1850.

Also available: another impression trimmed at bottom so the ee in Klee is partly missing. Price: $1250.
Coeur et fleche / Heart and Arrow (G. 1072). Original color lithograph, 1985. 75 signed impressions. This lithograph served as a Daniel Lelong's New Year's Greeting Card to his very closest friends and the best customers of Galerie Lelong, Paris. Our is a pencil-signed impression. Image size: 180x231mm. Price: SOLD.
Seated Woman I. Original color lithograph, 1989. 50 signed & numbered impressions. Image size: 304x246mm. Price: $600.
